POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Manager, Communications position fills a pivotal role within New York City FC. The Manager will help uphold and sustain the reputation and public perception of the Club by providing strategic advice, managing communications campaigns, and garnering positive earned media. In consultation with New York City FC’s Senior Manager, Communications, this Manager will help execute the non-football portions of the department’s communications plan.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
This scope of work is organized around strategic and tactical activities for non-soccer specific areas of internal and external communications for New York City FC, divided into the following areas of responsibility:
1) Corporate Communications
- Assist the Senior Manager, Communications in preparing and reviewing communications on behalf of New York City FC spokespeople, including remarks, speeches, briefing documents, biographies, talking points, and quotes
- Support new partner launch events and help execute communications plans/activations for existing partners
- Maintain awards database and work across departments to apply for awards on a strategic basis
2) Stadium Project Communications
- Support the Senior Manager, Communications and Vice President, Communications in developing and executing communications strategy in the lead up to Etihad Park’s opening in 2027 and beyond
- Create coverage reports for major news moments related to Etihad Park announcements
3) Community Communications and Public Affairs
- Generate earned media for New York City FC’s community events and campaigns
- Develop media assets, including press releases and media alerts, to proactively pitch media to attend Club-led community events and player appearances
4) Hospitality and Protocol
- Matchday support at all New York City FC home games
- Host Club VIPs and guests in hospitality suites at home games and high-profile Club events and help provide unique experiences to key stakeholders
5) Internal Communications
- Deliver New York City FC’s internal communications to ensure confidential information remains private and need-to-know information is properly relayed to respective parties in a timely manner
- Evaluate and develop New York City FC’s internal communications channels to ensure best-practice and efficiency across the organization
WHAT YOU BRING:
- Bachelor’s Degree from a university or college
- 2-4 years’ communications and PR experience working within similar role
- Experience with sports and entertainment industry a plus but not required
- Strong writing skills and AP style proficiency
- Generate story ideas and the ability to make them interesting to media
- Experience writing press releases and pitching stories of all types to a wide selection of media outlets and working with reporters, editors, and producers
- Media contacts and ability to identify new media outlets regularly
- Knowledge of key players in the sports and entertainment industry and how industry news directly or indirectly affects the business
- Knowledge of both New York and national media, and the ability to identify, connect, and leverage relationships to generate coverage
- Experience working with executives and doing internal communications preferred
- Able to work both independently and in a collaborative environment
- Proficient in Word and PowerPoint
- Ability to problem solve and handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion
ADDITIONAL REQUIRMENTS:
- Applicant must be able to comply with MLS Next Safety and Well-Being policy and any other applicable child safety policies provided to applicants by NYCFC
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as necessary
COMPENSATION:
This exempt position has an estimated annual base salary range of $65,000-$72,500 and is not overtime eligible. Final compensation offer amounts are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to demonstrated skill set, years and depth of relevant experience, and some role-dependent factors such as certifications and software expertise.
